Week In Review
I often think ahead of time what I want to say in each Sunday post and because I do this so often without even realizing, when I finally sit at the computer with my fingers hovered above the keys, my mind goes completely blank. I shouldn't do this to myself. Normally if I had a piece of paper laying around I would have written down everything I had thought and later transferred it to the computer.
Anyways, here goes. I'm just gonna throw caution to the wind and type exactly what's on my mind as I'm thinking it (hopefully nothing bad lol).
After clocking in nine hours of work for the ninth day in a row (yes you heard correctly, nine hours a day for nine days straight) I think I know how a zombie feels, minus the eating of the brains part. I feel physically exhausted and some mornings I feel I (should) pry my eyes open with toothpicks. Who would have thought flowers were so popular for Easter?? Not I! As much as it sounds like I'm complaining I'm really not, I'm grateful for everything I have and can do, just this week went by so fast I feel like I haven't really done anything at all. So let's review.
On April 4th I started my Welcome To Digital Photography Course taught by Sheena Wilkie which I absolutely LOVE! This past Tuesday was my second week and I'm amazed at how much I learn in such a short amount of time, it's almost overwhelming until I get home and review my notes and fully absorb it.
The first week we focused on exposure and last week we focused on Depth of Field or DoF, plus proper exposure. To be frank, everything I had taught myself about photography beforehand was guess work. I'm not embarrassed to admit it. I had no one to teach me but I knew what look I wanted out of a photo and I went for it. The difference now is that I'm starting to understand what all the rest of the buttons on my camera are for (it sounds silly, I know) but it's finally making sense and making it so much easier for me to achieve the look I want. I'm getting so excited just talking about I'm getting goosebumps again! (Down girl!)
I have a few photos I want to share with you to go along with my weekly assignments for this course. I didn't put a lot of oomph into it because I really wanted to focus on what the assignment was about.
(Since my computer isn't co-perating (I told you machines and I don't get along!) with me and I can't find the photos I want I will just post some I took today of absolutely nothing, just practicing my exposure. For the most part I think my exposure is spot on. I've definitely noticed a difference in my photos just by noticing how metering works and it's taken the guessing work out of it for me, bonus!)
So that was what my first week was all about at night school.
Last week we reviewed our work (we have to hand in three photos that we go over at the beginning of the next class) and went right into discussing depth of field and how to achieve it.
I've often created this look before not knowing it was actually depth of field and knowing what I know now, it really isn't hard to achieve at all.
For those of you who are wondering, DOF is the portion of a scene that appears sharp in the image.
To control depth of field you have three factors to work with:
- Aperature size
- Camera to subject distance
- Lens focal length
DOF can really make an image quite stunning. It can make it pop where it counts if done correctly.
Anyway I won't lecture you with all the boring talk, here are my three examples,
Not the greatest but not the worst either. You can see how a different mug is sharp in each picture.
So that's my review about school. Exciting isn't it? I thought so!
Outside of working like a fiend this week that's really all I've been up to. Not much to review at all.
I did buy a new book that I adore (I've yet to finish it) cover to cover.
It's definitely a must read for budding wedding photographers out there. Loaded with lots of tips, examples and genuine knowledge, not to mention the pictures are worth fawning over.
That sums up my week in review. As always, I look forward to what next week may bring :)
